San Diego County Expands Senior Rental Assistance Program

A pilot rental subsidy program for older adults in San Diego has been expanded to include an additional 160 individuals at risk of homelessness. Targeted at residents over 55, the program provides a $500 monthly rental subsidy for 18 months, paid directly to landlords.

Initially, 222 households were selected for the pilot launched last year. The county is now accepting applications, with participants chosen randomly.

Eligibility requirements include being 55 or older, a San Diego resident, having a household income at or below 50% of the area median income, being severely rent burdened, and having a lease or rental agreement with a willing landlord. Participants must also not be receiving other rental subsidies and must consent to program participation and evaluation.

According to the 2023 Point-in-Time Count, nearly 30% of the region’s homeless population is over 55.
